Travels in the time of Covid-19

It’s been, and still very much is, a strange time. Beyond the awful and ongoing human tragedy many industries have been devastated. Travel has been one of the worst affected, but I’m glad to report that there are at least a few green shoots that provide a bit of light in this dark time.

Following the Scottish Government’s easing of lockdown restrictions in July I’ve been out on the road. First up was a cruise with Red Moon Cruises on the west coast, then we pushed on to see how luxury hotels like Gleneagles and Glenapp Castle are welcoming and reassuring visitors still understandably nervous about travelling. We’ve also been glamping in a Leyland horse truck at Alexander House and wild camping too. Responsibly of course!

There has been more interest in Scottish staycations this year than I can remember from editors and I’ve written pieces since the summer for The Sun, Telegraph, i, Quirky Cruise, Fabulous Magazine, the Independent, Wanderlust, Herald and The Scotsman.

Here is my story for The Herald on travels in the time of Covid-19 https://www.heraldscotland.com/author/profile/80080.Robin_McKelvie/.

I also wrote an article for The Sun sharing my experience and travel options for the readers https://www.thesun.co.uk/uncategorized/12469465/visit-scotland-perfect-staycation-kids-school/.

This one is for the i on my favourite campsites – as the author of Cool: Camping Scotland – in the country https://inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyle/travel/15-best-scottish-campsites-to-visit-re-open-highlands-west-lothian-542105.

For American website Quirky Cruise the theme was the return to the water of small ships in Scotland in the time of Covid-19 https://quirkycruise.com/scottish-cruising-in-the-time-of-covid-19/.

Cruising was again the theme for a Telegraph piece on the glorious small ship Red Moon https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/cruises/articles/cruising-returns-scotland-wild-west-coast-family/.

And again for the Independent on Scottish cruising https://www.independent.co.uk/independentpremium/travel/scottish-cruising-time-covid-19-b675098.html.

For Fabulous it was all-year round Scottish glamping https://www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/13050579/glamping-sites-scotland-travel/.

Every week I’ve also been focusing on a different destination in Scotland for The Scotsman in the following 48 Hours format:

I’ve also been busy relaunching the Scottish travel website my wife and me run – www.insiderscotland.com. Much more to come on that.

Stay tuned for a lot more to come on Scotland in general as I think Scottish staycations are here to stay as more people discover all this epic country of over 800 islands offers.
